Our Story

The Kitchen Where It All Began

What started as a love for gathering people around good food has grown into something we're incredibly proud of.

Leaf Cypress didn't begin with a business plan. It started with a Sunday roast that turned into an impromptu cooking lesson, which became a standing invitation, which eventually became something that simply couldn't stay contained to our own kitchen anymore.

In 2014, we opened our doors in Melbourne with a single purpose: to share the joy of cooking without the pretension that often surrounds it. No chef's whites required. No intimidating terminology. Just real food, real techniques, and the kind of patient instruction that turns uncertainty into confidence.

We've never been interested in creating dependent students. We want to give you the skills to never need us again.

Over the years, we've had the privilege of watching thousands of people discover their own relationship with food. Some came wanting to impress at dinner parties. Others needed to feed their families better on tight schedules. Many simply wanted a creative outlet after long weeks at work.

What they found was something more. A sense of accomplishment. A new way to connect with loved ones. The quiet satisfaction of creating something nourishing from raw ingredients and a bit of focused attention.

What Guides Us

Technique Over Tricks

We teach foundational skills that apply across cuisines, not shortcuts that only work once. Understanding why something works matters more than memorising steps.

Personal Pace

Everyone learns differently. We adapt our instruction to match how you absorb information best, whether that's through doing, watching, or detailed explanation.

Honest Feedback

You won't hear empty praise from us. We give constructive, specific guidance that actually helps you improve—delivered with respect and encouragement.

Joy First

Cooking should feel good. We create an atmosphere where mistakes are learning opportunities and laughter is as common as sizzling pans.

The People Behind the Aprons

A small team with big hearts and a genuine love for what we do.

Marcus Chen

Founder & Lead Instructor

Former restaurant chef who traded long service hours for the joy of teaching. Specialises in Asian fusion and classical French technique.

Elena Rossi

Pastry & Baking Specialist

Trained in Italy with an obsessive attention to detail. Believes that baking is as much science as art, and teaches both with equal passion.

Tom Whitmore

Plant-Based Cuisine Expert

Proves daily that vegetables deserve centre stage. His workshops convert even committed carnivores to the possibilities of plant-forward cooking.

Experience the Difference Yourself

The best way to understand what we do is to join us in the kitchen. Your first session is always an introduction—no pressure, just good food and good conversation.

Looking Ahead

We remain intentionally small. Growth for its own sake has never appealed to us. What excites us is depth—going further with the people who trust us to guide their culinary journey.

In the coming year, we're developing new workshop formats, expanding our recipe development consultations, and creating resources for those who want to continue learning between sessions. The core, though, stays the same: real connection, real skills, real food.

Whether you're just discovering us or have been part of our kitchen family for years, thank you. Every shared meal, every moment of breakthrough, every "I can't believe I made this"—that's why we do what we do.
